TUTTOFOOD: thoughts turn to 2017. And it has already happened

TUTTOFOOD 2017:  a year and a half from the next edition, the many big industry names, the main Italian production regions, as well as important agrifood associations, as well as international companies and collectives are confirmed.

To date, in fact, more than a third of the exhibition area occupied in 2015 has already been booked, a situation identical to that achieved at the same date of the last edition.

The initial feedback of this 2016 – underlines Corrado Peraboni, Managing Director of Fiera Milano – confirms that TUTTOFOOD has been able to fully exploit the impetus of EXPO in a longer-term perspective. The new resources coming from the capital increase allow us to further strengthen activities aimed at increasing the internationalisation of our business, exploiting the Made in Italy appeal.

Our portfolio – concluded Peraboni – includes leading events in sectors in which Italy is the worldwide benchmark. The growing internationalisation is for us an essential step to also contribute in the coming decades to the further development of the exhibition system and the economy as a whole”.

The 2017 edition

The adhesion of companies in the TUTTOFOOD project is also related to the many innovations of the 2017 edition, which will see the inclusion of two new product sectors, with the development of the presence in the fruit and vegetable sector, started in 2015 with the first edition of Fruit Innovation, and which will complete the event with the industry’s products; and with the other big first, TUTTOHEALTH / Nutrition Space. Thanks to the agreement signed between Fiera Milano and Akesios, a company specializing in the organization of medical-scientific conferences and congresses, TUTTOFOOD 2017 will in fact be expanded, in addition to a dedicated exhibition area, with a conference programme that will constitute an opportunity for knowledge and sharing, involving new players, such as doctors, nutritionists, dietitians, wellness operators, personal trainers and pharmacists thanks to an agenda of great scientific rigour. A partnership that reinforces the role of TUTTOFOOD as the international nerve centre for the debate on nutrition and health, as well as an irreplaceable business platform.

Within the scope of the traditional sectors, PASTA ITALIA, which stems from the Fiera Milano partnership with AIDEPI, the Association of Italian Confectionery and Pasta Industries, is gathering much consensus.

Also the adhesions of all the other sectors of TUTTOFOOD are growing: from dairy to grocery companies, from the oil sector – with the significant confirmation of Unaprol – to the green economy, from the meat and sausage sector – with the confirmation, thanks to ASSICA, of the main Italian industry players – to the confectionery, thanks again to the partnership with AIDEPI, fish and beverage sectors.

And a new project will ensure the growth of TUTTOFROZEN, the area dedicated to frozen foods, developed together with UNAS, to present a method of food preservation that combines freshness and naturalness with convenience, increasingly demanded by consumer lifestyles

New in the next edition is also the international road show of TUTTOFOOD, organized in collaboration with ITA-Ice, which with several stages will be in and outside Europe in 2016 and 2017.

The connected store: technology is changing the role of the sales assistant

“The connected store is a necessity”: that’s how Henri Seroux, Senior Vice President EMEA of Manhattan Associates begins in this video interview conducted during the World Retail Congress.

Omnichannel in fact brings with it a change in the role of physical stores and of how new generation sales assistants must operate in assisted sales, particularly in the clothing and luxury goods sectors, but not only. To provide an excellent service, in fact, they must know the online and offline history of the customer, ensure completion of the order process, facilitate cross-channel returns and exchanges and accelerate payment and check-out.

Today’s sales assistants no longer remain behind the counter or at the till, but are constantly on the move inside the store, creating a new class of sales consultants (sales, customer service and order completion assistants) with specific skills able to ensure the best shopping experience possible, across all channels.

Amazon surpasses Walmart, digital surpasses real?

The news is enough to make you shiver: Amazon, queen of the Dot coms, after an extremely positive sales quarter, has been valued at 18% more ($40 billion) than previously, surpassing the stars and stripes supermarket giant Walmart: 262 compared to 233 billion dollars.  Digital beats real?  The news comes after years of red ink for Jeff Bezos’ company, but nevertheless makes a certain impression.

Walmart in terms of turnover is the largest company in the world, with 11,000 stores worldwide and 2 million employees. Market valuations aside, the two companies were already involved in a head to head battle last week when Amazon launched the “Prime Day” (see here) and Walmart hit back, again via its e-commerce channel, offering discounts on cult objects such as the iPad.

GEA-Fondazione Edison Observatory: the 4 As pull along Made in Italy. The USA looks to food

The new edition of the GEAFondazione Edison Observatory records that in 2013 Italian food represented an important driver in export growth.

On a base of reference of 616 products, in fact, Italy has 63 products in which it gains first, second or third place in the world for best foreign balance of trade, generating a total of 21.5 billion dollars.

Together, the ‘4 As’ of Made in Italy (Alimentari-vini/food-wine; Abbigliamento-moda/clothing-fashion; Arredo-casa/furnishings-home; Automazione-meccanica-gomma-plastica/Automation-mechanical-rubber-plastics) confirm a positive growth reaching a new record of 128 billion euros.

From an analysis of the data what emerges, furthermore, is that the United States is the third-largest export market for Italy, after Germany and France, with overall Italian exports to the USA of 29.8 billion euros and a surplus of 17.3 billion, the highest Italy had in 2014 in bilateral trade.

The American market, in particular, is increasingly focalised on the food sector and this presents the greatest potential for growth; suffice to consider that in 2014, about 10% of Italian exports were to the American market. The first 10 provincial-sectorial examples of highest food exports towards the USA in 2014 are: Florence, Lucca, Grosseto, Milan and Perugia for oils and vegetable & animal fats; Modena for other food products; Naples for baked and flour products; Salerno for fruit and veg that have been prepared and conserved; Sassari and Parma for the products of the dairy industries. The first 10 provincial-sectorial examples of highest wine and drink exports towards the USA in 2014 are: Trento, Milan, Cuneo, Florence, Verona, Siena, Venice, Treviso, Asti and Brescia. In total, 61 agriculture and food products in which Italy came first, second or third in the world for best balance of trade with the USA, for a bilateral commercial surplus of 3.3 billion dollars.

The increasingly strong relationship between the US market and Italian food has been confirmed by a GEA Digital study. From this, which focused on the feelings towards food, and Italian food in particular, expressed by consumers throughout the world and the USA through web traffic, what emerged is that the number of searches relating to food from US users is three times higher than the rest of the world and that Italian food beats other online topics such as Italian art and music.

Starting from an awareness of the enormous potential of Italian food in the USA, Luigi Consiglio, President of GEA (in the photo) , comments: «The data and trends demonstrate that interest in Italian food throughout the world is very strong, in particular in the United States, an extremely lively market, where the demand expresses the expectation of healthier food. Today anyone who says the US market is saturated is wrong. The opportunities for Made in Italy are there and there is a lot of space for all the food and agricultural industries who wish to export and invest in the USA. The political battle that has been fought up to now has not allowed us to see the wonders of our industrial system. For this reason GEA, along with the Harvard Business Review Italia, wanted to overcome the stereotypes about Italian industry through the creation of an annual overview of the entrepreneurial excellences of Italy».

Thus was conceived the GEA-Harvard Business Review Italia “Business Excellence” Prize, which will be awarded for the second time on 27 October 2015.

Ahold Delhaize chooses Pedon as co-packer for new organic range

Albert Heijn, the major Dutch retailer and part of the Ahold Delhaize group, has commissioned Pedon for the production and packaging of a range of organic cereals, rice and pulses. AH brand products are sold in 966 of the chain’s supermarkets in the Netherlands, with the possibility of expanding into Germany and Belgium in the near future.

The range produced by Pedon includes seven quick-cooking, organically-grown items which combine well-being and quality products with speedy preparation and convenience. They are also suitable for vegetarian or vegan diets.

Completely new items include wholemeal spelt couscous, a rice and Inca grains mix and a mix of rice, soya and lentils, which go alongside the already popular quinoa, bulgur, 5 grains, and rice and grain mix for a wide and varied range on the shelves.

Albert Heijnis, the main name for large-scale retail in Holland, is controlled by the multinational, Ahold, which has recently announced the purchase of 61% of the shares of the Belgian retailer Delhaize, creating the Ahold Delhaize group which, with a turnover of 54 million euros (the fourth largest in Europe) and over 6,500 stores worldwide, will control 4% of the United States food market.

Costan zero-impact refrigerated counters in the Naturasì Biomarket at the Expo

A more sensible use of resources, low energy consumption and environmental protection are, broadly speaking, the foundations on which the organic industry is built, and are also the key themes for the Expo. These principles have led to the collaboration between Costan (brand from the Epta group) and Naturasì, which is participating at the Expo with the Biomarket, a 350 square metre retail area at the heart of the Biodiversity Park, where the buying experience is combined with sustainability. For Naturasì and Costan, this means protecting the environment, in particular by reducing energy consumption in the cold chain – which in a point of sale accounts for an average of 40% of the total consumption – thanks to the use of low emission counters and a transcritical CO2 refrigeration system, resulting in an almost zero impact on global warming potential (GWP).

“The green, natural refrigerant solutions used,” confirms William Pagani, Epta’s Group Marketing Director, “perfectly integrate into a wider project, which sees working alongside NaturaSì to promote respect for the environment and a more sensible use of resources.”

BelliniTrend_NaturaSi

By using technologically advanced solutions, Epta guarantees excellent presentation and perfect preservation of food items, whilst maintaining quality. In specific terms, Costan has provided the Bellini Trend and GranVista plug-ins (incorporated unit counters) from the Rev UP Family, customized with pale wood cladding and abutments, guaranteeing maximum uniformity of the display and eco-sustainability of the store, thanks to the natural, 100% recyclable, materials chosen. Furthermore, the fittings of the new Rev UP range are designed to be energetically efficient, with savings of 62% compared to an open unit, and a 49.5% lower carbon footprint compared to previous models.

“The project completed in partnership with Costan” – comments Roberto Zanoni, the general manager of EcornaturaSì – “intends to promote organic and biodynamic Italian farming and agriculture as a sustainable model which, thanks to its characteristics, is a food system which is capable of responding to the great challenges of the Expo 2015. For us, Feeding the Planet means, in fact, protecting the fertility of the land, not polluting water and respecting the balance of nature, from production through to the selling of food products.”
